I’ve lived in Hampton Roads for ten years now but it’s only been in the last two that I’ve realized what a great town Smithfield is! Situated just across the water from Newport News and only a 45-60 minute drive from most of the Southside, Smithfield may be small but sure is mighty!
With several adorable storefronts of all types, dining, events, antiques, waterfront views and an extensive history, this town has it all! Spend a few hours or stay for the weekend in one of their quaint Bed & Breakfast’s and you will be sure to enjoy every moment.
Shopping in Smithfield is plentiful! From antique stores with thousands of items to peruse to clothing boutiques, specialty bath product shops, home decor, the Christmas store and more can all be found here. Here is more about a few of my favorites and why they are on that list.
First is Beyond Main, an adorable clothing boutique located on Main Street. They have a plethora of unique items for yourself or to use for gifting. Beyond Main carries an excellent selection of affordable boutique items and their styles are always on point. I have found many unique pieces at Beyond Main and the selection never disappoints.
Perfectly Natural Soap
Next shop to visit is Perfectly Natural Soap. It is an amazing store full of natural soaps, lotions, essential oils, and so much more. Not only does the shop smell wonderful, it is also always decorated perfectly. Their self-care offerings are out of this world! Whether you are looking to restock your soap supply, want to gift someone some self-care items or are a lover of all things bath/shower products, this is the place!
Laura and Lucy’s
Another shop to definitely check out is Laura and Lucy’s. This humongous antique store chop full of goodies is a real gem! Every time we visit Laura and Lucy’s, we find unique items unlike anything anywhere else. From antique jewelry to lamps, musical instruments, vases and more, this shop will have something you never knew you needed!
The Christmas Store
Finally, if you don’t visit The Christmas Store while in town, you have truly missed out. No matter the time of year, this store will transport you directly into the holiday spirit. You can find ornaments and holiday gifts of all types here all displayed beautifully. It’s a great place that is well worth your time.
Whether you love antiques or simply want a walk down nostalgia lane, Smithfield is your place to shop until you drop!
Bakeries, waterfront dining, cafes focused around one of Smithfield’s biggest products- ham, in regards to food and drink, Smithfield has a little bit of everything.
One favorite for those near and far is Yummaries Bakery. This place boasts some of the best sweet treats and pastries in the area and probably even beyond! We have yet to taste something we haven’t loved at Yummaries. Judging by the lines and often sold out items, everyone else is as enamored as we are!
Another restaurant worthy of your reservation is Wharf Hill Brewing Co. known for good food, a fun venue, music and more! It’s a great spot located on the hill overlooking the water straight down Main Street.
The Smithfield Station is a spot a little further off the Main Street situated perfectly on the water. With beautiful views, easy boat access, delicious food and drink, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. And if you go, let me recommend the Boom Boom Shrimp appetizer! Yum!
For coffee lovers, you must check out Cure! Originally started in Norfolk, Cure has expanded to Smithfield and is a great place for your morning cup of coffee! Featuring delicious drinks and breakfast items, Cure is the perfect spot to start your day or even to pass some time relaxing with a good read.
The list above does not include all the restaurant and cafe offerings as there are even more places worth checking out. These happen to be my favorites and recommendations for your visit but take some time to do your research and visit any of the other fine establishments Smithfield has to offer.
Events & More
Smithfield knows how to throw an event. Each year, they host dozen of events that attract locals and out of town visitors alike.
One such event is their popular Vintage Market which takes over much of Main Street. Featuring a variety of vendors and their wares, this market focuses on the selling of one of a kind items vintage goods. Another favorite is their Christmas Market. This event usually takes place a few weeks before the holiday and sure keeps the holiday spirit alive. Vendors of all kinds bring their wares to sell and the street is jam packed with visitors, shoppers and merchants! It’s a popular event so plan your trip accordingly in order to maximize your visit!
Additionally, I wanted to mention a few events that I know are quite popular. Even though I have yet to attend them, they are definitely worthy of being on your radar.
On my Smithfield to do list includes the Wine and Brew Fest which takes place at the Windsor Castle Park every spring. Featuring wine, beer, music and more, this event is always popular among enthusiasts. As is the Bacon, Bourbon and Music Fest. This event happens every fall in the same location as the Wine and Beer Fest. This event is equally as popular and sure to be a good time while showcasing the great town! Tickets sell quickly for both of these events so mark your calendars if you want to attend!
Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to mention the ability to take in a bit of history while enjoying this quaint old town. From the ability to do guided tours through the town to checking out the museums, there is much history to explore and learn in Smithfield.
