Million Bulb Walk

Norfolk Botanical Gardens

We recently did one of the most popular holiday activities in Hampton Roads, visiting the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. This time of year, the gardens are illuminated with an extensive numbers of lights as they prepare to host many visitors! The NBG features two exciting events for the holidays. First being the Million Bulb Walk and secondly the Garden of Lights. Each unique in their own way yet extremely beautiful and bring the joy of the season to many!

How it Works

The Million Bulb Walk features approximately a one mile walk through the lighted portions of the garden. The walk makes a winding path through the gardens and ends with the option to walk the path back to the parking area or take the tram back to do the same.

Throughout the walk, there are various light displays. From an ocean scene to the stars and moon hung over the bridge to dragons, flowers, elves and more, the walk is a delight for all! All ages are sure to enjoy the sights every step of the way as they truly are a treat!

Admission is $18 per person for adults ($16 for members) and $10 per child. The walk begins at 4pm and ends at 9pm. The Million Bulb Walk ends soon so if you are trying to visit this year then your days are numbered-its closes December 14. The walk typically runs mid-November through mid-December before transitioning to the Garden of Lights (see more below).

Going earlier in the season is a good idea but there truly is not a bad time to visit for the walk though keeping your eye on the weather definitely helps!

Tips for the Trip

  • Buy your tickets in advance for the specific date you want to attend (no refunds)
  • Check the long range weather to plan your trip ahead of time
  • Dress for the weather
  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking
  • Be patient in potential long lines
  • Ride the tram back to the parking lot to avoid walking back
  • Carpool if possible
  • Bring a stroller or wagon for little ones

Garden of Lights

Speaking of the Garden of Lights, it starts December 15 and is another great way to experience the lights! From 5:30 pm until 10 pm nightly, you can drive through the lights while enjoying the comforts of your warm car.

The Garden of Lights runs nightly for $25 per car and on the weekends (Friday-Sunday) for $30. Garden members, military and city employees each save $5 off all admissions.

Named one of the best light displays in the country, the Garden of Lights is quite the sight and a great way to get in the spirit of the season!

In conclusion, the Norfolk Botanical Gardens light display either by foot or car, is definitely a must do holiday activity! Be sure to add this to your calendars during the busy holiday season as it is sure to be a hit for all members of the family!
